Well, we spent our last child-free day walking around Hong Kong with another couple and getting ready for tomorrow. I don’t think it’s set-in for either of us that we are going to meet our daughter tomorrow. It’s strange how the realization comes and goes. Poor Scott, he never knows why Melissa’s holding back tears these days. Usually, it has something to do with Kate and how lucky we are.
So, what can we tell you about Hong Kong today?
Most of the HK residents don’t think much of all of us Americans. I think they see many of us on a regular basis. They are, however, captivated by blonde hair. Maybe they’ve heard that blondes have more fun and want in on the details.
There seems to be an endless amount of construction going on in Hong Kong. This is nothing different than any other booming city, but do other cities build scaffolding with bamboo?!! That’s right, they use BAMBOO TIED TOGETHER to work on a 60+ story highrise. I wonder if the emergency rooms have a special box to check on the paperwork to indicate bamboo-related injuries!
Although everyone we spoke with said that HK was not the place to buy electronics, THEY WERE SOOOOO WRONG. We wish we would have waited until we got here to buy a laptop. We could have gotten a lightweight, state-of-the-art, brand new model from a reputable store for $600.
There are American products and restaurants everywhere. So far, we’ve seen: McDonald’s, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Ruth Cris Steakhouse, Nike, Coke, Pepsi, Sylvan Learning Center, and more.
Speaking of Coke, they have a diet soda called “Coke Light.” Same as Diet Coke, right? Wrong! It uses different percentages of the ingredients so each country’s Coke drink is slightly different. This one is decidedly sweeter. If any of you have tried Pepsi One, it’s similar.
Well, that’s it for now. We will update as soon as we can tomorrow after receiving Kate. Please keep her in your thoughts / prayers, as she will be undergoing a wonderful – but big – change in her life. We know that she will be very happy with us, but we also know that she doesn’t realize that yet.
We love you!
Scott and Melissa
